Polar Promise: Sustainability Report (2019)

Seabird Watch Quark Expeditions has been a supporter of Seabird Watch, a citizen science initiative aimed at monitoring seabird populations across the globe, since its inception. Built from the successful toolkit developed by Penguin Watch, Seabird Watch uses time-lapse camera technology to monitor seabird colonies in diƒcult to access parts of the world, including Svalbard, Iceland, and Greenland in the Arctic. Members of the Seabird Watch team traveled with Quark Expeditions on board Ocean Adventurer to Svalbard to access cameras, change batteries, and collect the images that were taken. Because seabirds spend most of their lives at sea and feed near the top of the food chain, changes in their populations are likely to re’ect changes occurring in the wider ecosystems. This makes them excellent indicators of the health of the marine environment. However, the world’s seabirds are in decline. Fisheries, pollution, invasive predators, habitat destruction, and human disturbance have all had signi„cant impacts on seabird populations, making them the most threatened group of birds globally.
