Our successes at Snow Hill Island, especially in November 2023 when we reached the legendary Emperor penguin colony on two separate voyages, were the culmination of 32 years of polar expertise—and our unrivalled track record in bringing guests to Snow Hill Island. We made polar history in 2004 when we became the first operator to reach the 8,000–strong Emperor penguin rookery, enabling guests to experience one of the most exclusive wildlife encounters on the planet. Our Expedition Team—the most experienced in the industry—has landed more guests on hard-to-reach Snow Hill Island than anyone else. In 2023 alone, our team brought 208 guests to the Emperor penguin colony on the 14–day " Emperor Penguin Quest: Expedition to Snow Hill ." At the helm on both voyages was veteran Expedition Leader Shane Evoy, who has led 19 successful Snow Hill landings—an industry record! We also attribute last year’s Snow Hill successes to our technologically–advanced ship Ultramarine, which was built for this type of expedition. The vessel is equipped with two twin–engine helicopters that fly guests to the vicinity of this rarely–visited rookery, whereupon they walk across the thick sea ice to stand within meters of the most coveted penguin species on the planet.
