Spitsbergen Spitsbergen, known as the Wildlife Capital of the Arctic, is the largest island in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. Located about 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole, Spitsbergen is dark four months of the year, but when the sun returns in April, the days lengthen until sometime in June when the sun never sets. It’s this near-constant light that creates the perfect conditions to view the wildlife species that have made Spitsbergen so popular: polar bears, walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes, beluga whales, seals and seabirds—all of which we hope to view against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, glaciers and fjords.
