Arctic 2025 Brochure

Sustainability Matters.

This infographic reflects QUARK EXPEDITIONS’ sustainability successes and goals— celebrating our past while... PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE!

Good explorers respect their environment. Great ones protect it. In April 2019, we reinforced our commitment to the polar regions with the unveiling of POLAR PROMISE , our comprehensive and holistic sustainability strategy for the Polar Regions. In Polar Promise, Quark Expeditions identifies measurable goals to be reached by 2025.

REDUCE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS Quark Expeditions continues to reduce single-use plastics on board our ships. Annually, we eliminate approximately:

By working with our hotel provider, we’ve replaced individually wrapped items like butter, sugar, jam, honey, and yogurt with bulk versions. We’ve installed water fountains on our vessels so that guests can refill their own reusable Quark Expeditions water bottle as needed. Cabins have been outfitted with soap and shampoo dispensers to reduce waste, and we provide straws, paper napkins, and receipts only on request.

320 , 000 Single use bottles. Our guests receive their own reusable water bottles!

14 , 000 Individual yogurt containers.

7 , 600 Parka bags.

Now in bundles versus individual plastic bags.

OFF-SHIP INITIATIVES

$270 , 425 USD

USD

Our annual goal to support Polar Research and Conservation.

Auction proceeds supporting South Georgia Heritage Trust and Friends of South Georgia.

Quark Expeditions provides free berths to conservation and scientific organizations, giving scientists access to remote regions to further their research. In addition, our guests contribute to these organizations through our onboard auctions. TRAINING THROUGH NALUNAIQSIJIIT: THE INUIT CRUISE TRAINING INITIATIVE

Through Nalunaiqsijiit: The Inuit Cruise Training Initiative, Quark Expeditions hires interns to work and learn on Arctic voyages to Nunavut. Many of these participants are subsequently hired as expedition guides in the Arctic and Antarctic. The goal of this Government of Nunavut program is to equip Nunavummiut with the qualifications and certifications necessary to pursue careers in the expedition cruise industry. From 2014 to 2018, Quark Expeditions’ guests supported the Habitat Restoration project and, in 2018, South Georgia was declared rodent free. Since then, proceeds from on-board auctions have been directed to the Biosecurity Dog Programme, which is vital to the recovering of bird populations.

BLUE MARINE FOUNDATION Quark Expeditions, in partnership with our sister brands at Travelopia, is proud to partner with Blue Marine Foundation. This partnership focuses on preserving coastlines and marine life that restore essential ocean ecosystems critical for fighting climate change. These "blue carbon ecosystems" are vital for removing and storing carbon, protecting diverse marine life, and supporting local communities through training and employment in marine conservation.
